Hello, Loving Without Boundaries (LWB) community!
I am absolutely delighted and thrilled to share my latest podcast interview with Bethany Snyder and Kris Maul, an inspirational coaching client success story. These two beautiful humans reached out to me back in September of 2024 after they had recently opened up their relationship – at that time together 18 years and married for 16 – about two months prior. On their in-take form that prospective clients fill out prior to speaking to me, they had vulnerably shared:
“About 5 weeks ago started having trust broken—broken agreements, hiding information—that has caused us to close our relationship (temporarily) to rebuild trust and make sure our foundation is solid before re-opening. This has negatively impacted our relationship by creating a significant trust issue, and related hurt, for the first time ever.”
Wow. That’s a tricky situation, and unfortunately, all too common when well-intentioned folks open up before they adequately get the skills to have healthy, happy open relationships where everyone feels safe, has a better understanding of how to get each of their respective needs met, while being to communicate effectively in a loving and constructive way (versus someone feeling attacked, the other behaving defensively, and then getting on the “Field Of Battle” versus the Field of Understanding and Non-Judgment). With the right coaching and advanced tools, folks like Bethany (a queer woman) and Kris (a transgender man) can remember that they are on the same team, while putting into practice effective tools and strategies including identifying and creating awareness around needs and cherished values. I so honor Bethany and Kris for not giving up on each other, or themselves, and courageously doing the immersive inner and outer work to not just survive but thrive in healthy relationships that feel fantastic – whether open currently or not.
Bethany and Kris – I am so deeply proud of you both for all of your hard work, your persistence, your grit, and you both staying coachable, resourceful, and committed towards your own collective growth. Onward and upward, you two amazing humans! It is an honor and privilege to serve you both!
Here is thier Bio:
Bethany Snyder and Kris Maul are a queer couple living in Urbandale, Iowa with their amazing 14-year-old kiddo and adorable pets. Bethany grew up in Altoona and attended the University of Iowa, while Kris was born in Illinois and moved to the Madison, Wisconsin area in middle school. They have lived all over the country from Washington, DC, to Minneapolis, to Northern California, before moving to Iowa in 2019.
Some topics we discuss in this highly interesting, informative, and thought-provoking interview:
-
Their journey as a queer couple opening their marriage and exploring ethical non-monogamy.
-
How communication breakdowns and shame cycles hindered open dialogue about feelings and actions.
-
Resurfacing of childhood wounds and identity issues that previously seemed healed.
-
Their experience with individual/couples therapy before finding Loving Without Boundaries (LWB) alternative relationship coaching.
-
The need for concrete tools rather than long-term therapeutic reflection.
-
Immediate tools learned included mindfulness practices, daily routines, and focusing on wins and progress rather than deficits.
-
How the sense of community within the LWB coaching program provided validation through shared experiences and allowed for different perspectives on similar issues.
