Cheers Sexy People!
Hello, Loving Without Boundaries (LWB) community! My heart goes out to you during these challenging times. I hope you are doing your best to keep safe. Sharing inspirational stories of hope, inclusion, and healthy lifestyles are more important than ever. If you are looking for ways to connect loved ones you are separated from, check out this blog post that I shared recently. On to another inspiring story…
I am so absolutely delighted to share my latest podcast interview that I released yesterday with author of several amazing polyamory-friendly books, Kathy Labriola. I have not yet had the good fortune to meet Kathy in person, but most certainly hope to someday. She has done much work for our overall community, including her most recent work, “The Polyamory Breakup Book: Causes, Prevention, and Survival.” Wow, how timely as during COVID, I am seeing many relationships not be able to withstand the pressure of these strange times. Experiencing a breakup in a polyamorous setting can be – surprisingly for those on the outside of our community – an extremely lonely and sad journey. Folks in monogamous relationships can be quite confused. The idea is: “Well you can’t be THAT sad… you already have these other partners! How many do you need anyway?” Ouch. That totally invalidates someone’s very real experience of loss, trauma, and even devastation at losing an intimate partner, potentially someone in your emotional support network. Even just re-defining an open relationship from one status to another (eg. nesting partner to friends with benefits) can feel like a huge loss – a downgrade. Kathy, thank you so much for sharing this important and needed work. You are so fabulous to honor us with your hard-earned wisdom. Yes!
Here is Kathy Labriola’s Bio:
Kathy Labriola is a counselor, nurse, and hypnotherapist in private practice in Berkeley, California, working with low-income people in the poly, queer, kink, and anarchist alternative subcultures. She has been a card-carrying bisexual and polyamorist for 50 years. She is “extra-crunchy” and rides a bicycle, lives in a housing cooperative, and raises chickens and grows most of her own food. She is the author of three “how-to” books on open relationships.
Some topics we discuss in this fun, informative, and entertaining interview:
- We discuss some of Kathy’s other works, such as “The Jealousy Workbook: Exercises and Insights on Managing Open Relationships”, and “Love in Abundance: A Counselor’s Advice on Open Relationships.”
- Kathy shares about her background and why she loves the work that she does.
- Here is the description for Kathy’s Polyamory Breakup Book: “Polyamory is not always easy. With multiple partners often come more complex relationships to navigate. This practical guide looks at the common causes of polyamorous breakups, identifies strategies to avoid ending relationships, and provides you with the toolkit to survive a breakup. Kathy Labriola uses real life examples and expert insight as a counselor and nurse. From how to handle jealousy to the practicalities of managing money and time with multiple partners, this book includes tips and insights from the polyamory community. It is inevitable that some relationships will end in a breakup. This book helps you maintain friendships and minimize the impact of a breakup on the rest of your polycule and wider community. Unlike traditional breakup guides, Labriola’s book offers insight specific to the polyamory community and addresses the unique challenges that come with multiple partners.”
