Cheers Sexy People!
Hello there, Loving Without Boundaries community! I am super stoked to share my latest podcast interview with the amazing and wicked smart Dr. Liz Powell – author of her first book “Building Open Relationships: Your hands-on guide to swinging, polyamory, and beyond!”. I had the pleasure of getting to know Dr. Liz years ago when I went to my first Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit back in 2016. She and I attended the same trauma workshop by Ashley Manta who has been on the podcast also. Dr. Liz chimed in with incredible information during the workshop that blew me and the other attendees away. I made a mental note of who she was, and have been stalking… I mean following her and her work ever since – including inviting her on the LWB podcast (Episodes 41 & 42). 🙂 Besides loving her ever-changing hair color (which sometimes coincides with my purple locks), this rock star is incredibly articulate, intelligent (just check out her book!), well-organized (just check out her book!), super helpful to her fellow humans (just check out her book – see a theme?!), and an all around great person. Thankfully, we keep running into each other at polyamory conferences around the country – most recently at Southwest Love Fest in Tucson, Arizona. Wow was that epic! Anyway, I love this human! I look forward to the next conference or event that our paths cross. Dr. Liz, I am humbled and filled with so much gratitude for the amazing work that you do, including your most recent book. I am two-thirds of the way through it, and am blown away by the amount of kickass information as well as illustrative and vulnerable storytelling you share. Way to go, rock star!
Here is Dr. Liz Powell’s bio:
Dr. Liz believes that Great Sex Can Change the World™. She’s a speaker, coach, and licensed psychologist specializing in work with sexual and gender minorities, She’s the author of “Building Open Relationships”, a practical how-to guide for non-monogamy. Dr. Liz helps people be authentic in their relationships.
— In her work as a psychologist, Dr. Liz is passionate about helping sexual and gender minorities while giving them a safe and welcoming space to discuss whatever is coming up for them.
— Liz shares her identities of queer, bisexual, genderqueer, polyamorous, a slutty-person, kinky, and a switch and has been relating in some form of non-monogamy since she was 17 years old!
— She explains how the book came to be, and how she never envisioned herself writing a book by herself – yet here she is with this wonderful book and all its splendor!
— How she creatively used her D/s relationship coupled with a fear-of-punishment structure created by her Dom to assist in writing her book and get her book count complete.
— Accountability to her fans and her crowdfunding campaign was another factor in keeping forward momentum. Nice!
— Dr. Liz talks about what the impetus was for her to write this book – creating a guide not just about the theory of healthy non-monogamy but also offering tons of practical tools and “How-To’s” (via worksheets, steps to take, etc) that readers can use right now.
— She shares how even in 2019, there still is not enough adequate and thorough research about non-monogamy, and especially healthy non-monogamy. We also discuss the topic of how do we address the needs of this community in their actual lived experiences?
— Another topic we talk about is how often and when dysfunction and toxic messages shows up in our families of origin that we bring into our adult relationships.
— Dr. Liz shares what she sees as the three top issues that she encounters in non-monogamous relationships. This is GOLD! I won’t spoil the answer here — gotta play to win and hear the episode for yourself, peeps!
— Tune in to listen to this awesome podcast episode!
